Manakau School

Huiata

Posted on 6 February 2017

When I first started working at Taihape Area School, the junior school (years 1-8) gathered together to share what at the time they called "karakia", the Maori word for prayer. This process was led by children from Reo Rua - The bilingual class.  As time moved on it became obvious that there was a need to build on this process and open up the opportunity and expectation that all children and teachers could be leaders in this situation.  The name Huiata came from Whaea Avis Winiata, a respected kuia and teacher at the area school. Avis has recently passed away and her expertise is a loss to the Taihape community.

Huiata at Manakau School could include karakia, an opportunity to learn and practice new songs (waiata), a time to share notices and expectations for the day ahead.  It is in it's very early stages of development.  I encourage you to follow the links to the resources we will be using in class.  Have a go at learning the karakia and join us for school singing to practice the new songs.

A link to 'Whakataka te hau' (scroll down to find it), and an explanation of karakia

Whakataka te hau as a song - makes it easier to learn.
