Music Academy - From Deb's Desk

Nga mihi ki a koutou – Greetings to you all

Week 6 of this term has certainly come around quickly!  We’ve already packed a tonne of activities and learning into our classroom programmes.

Our music academy is in full swing.  The way it is set up allows for half the school to have instrument lessons and the other half have another activity, then we switch over. We have had a focus on building our knowledge of Te Ao Maori, starting with our introduction of Huiata which has included learning karakia and school waiata for all children. Kapahaka and Te Reo Maori are the focus of the other side of the music programme this year.  I am taking these sessions and the childrens enthusiasm has been fantastic.  We have identified some waiata that promote correct pronounciation and  we are aiming to have a kete(basket) full of songs that the children and staff can sing with pride.

If any parents/caregivers/extended family would like to come and join in these session, you are most welcome (Thursdays @ 1.30).  The aim is that we build our capabilities in this area of the New Zealand Curriculum, and develop an understanding of Manaakitanga.
